No, Bat
I’m meaning $1.98 for what is ‘honestly’ $2.00

The same here happens too. Many things are priced £1.98 or £1.99 to make them look cheaper than £2.00
Guess it's an almost universal marketing tactic.

I'm going to put on the other hat here......
Even in the present economically-troubled times we are living in affluent societies. The proof is right here in front of us in that we have our computers and we able to talk to the World!
The root of this wealth is nearly all created in one way - trade.

There might be many faults with the system. It gets up our nose when city bankers get bonuses of thousands, millions sometimes, just for shuffling a bit of money from here to there. Or big multinational companies get let off billions in tax while ordinary people are harrassed for every last penny owed.
But it's still trade that makes most jobs and creates the tax revenue that provides public services and pensions and benefits.

Is not the very cornerstone of our free democratic societies that an enterprising person has the right to go forth and seek their fortune?

And that will usually entail starting a commercial business of some sort.

'$1.98' is an insult to a persons intelligence.

$1.98 is deterioration.
…just as in personal survival for many is in the inhibitation of electric cars.
It is to cheat thy neighbor.

its reckoned that one pound out of every ten spent in the UK end ups in Tescos tills.
As the traditional high street shops continue to disappear and town centres become little more than a collection of wine bars, the question has to be asked, is it right that a few big supermarket chains should have wrangled almost complete dominance of the grocery & provisions trade?

Yes Mr. Bat!
I was in the city of Vancouver, one time. And I went to one of those automated check-out grocery stores. It made me feel like a robot. And everybody looked that way too!
It was creepy!
Later on, I tried to find that grocery store again. And it seems that it had closed-down. Because I couldn’t find it again.
Quite the creepy way of buying things. Becoming detached from people!

The prices were cheap. But, I was glad that I couldn’t find the store again! It gave me such an ominous dread feeling searching for the place.
Of course, I was compelled by the cheap prices.

Those stores don’t seem to be around here anymore.
There was stolid a teller.
Everybody mechanically swiped all their items through one of those scanner things. Just as robots would do.
.....................................................................

The best part of my day is in talking to people.
I wasn’t looking forward to going back to that robot store!

Quite agree. even if I have only one or two items would still prefer to queue up and see a real person at the till rather than just one of those mechanical self sevice things.
